In this article I hope to help you stop your dog digging. Or at least to stop him digging where you do not want him to!  Like your rose garden or in the middle of the lawn. First things first, you need to find out why he is digging.

The major problem here is probably boredom. Most dogs either dig because they are bored or trying to escape. As always you should set aside some time each day to play with your dog and take him for a walk.  You would be pretty bored too if you spent all day locked up in the same yard day in day out.

If you can, set aside a place where your dog is allowed to have a dig. A disused sandbox would be ideal or even make him a sandbox of his own. You can train him by burying his favorite ball or toy just below the surface and then letting him dig it up. Praise him for digging in his special place.

If you come home from work and find a hole there is no point yelling at your dog, he will have no idea what he is in trouble for since he probably dug the hole hours ago. If you can actually catch him in the act of digging in the wrong place, a sharp no will let him know that he is doing the wrong thing. Then take him to his place where he is allowed to dig, bury his toy and encourage him to dig it up.  Then give him lots of praise.

Another reason dogs dig is to make a cool place to lie down and cool off. Make sure your dog has plenty of shade and water in the yard or let him in to share the aircon with you!

It is very simple to stop your dog digging in specific places. Fill in the hole he has dug and bury some of his poo just below the surface. Guaranteed he will not dig there again. Some dogs dig around the fence line in the hope of getting out or to get to the dog next door. Same thing applies, when you pooper scoop the yard, throw the poo along the fence line. Before long you will have a dog proof fence!

I hope this article has been helpful and you try some of the methods I have suggested, they really do work.
